New blog on Guatemala at Water & Politics

Sean Cox at Water & Politics has two recent posts worth checking out. The first post is on support for Efrain Rios Montt in Nebaj based on recent David Stoll work. I haven't gotten around to David's paper yet. However, he argues that while war crimes were committed in the Nebaj area of the country, genocide was not. His argument seems to be that people were also killed for other reasons (political support for the guerrillas) and that everybody was doing it (the EGP).

The second post is Guatemalan government's seizure of five ports through the use of the military to cut down on corruption. Nothing like looking tough on corruption.

Sean also brought it to my attention that Google+ might have been depressing reader comments. And within hours of getting rid of Google+ to track comments, comments seemed to have picked up again. Thanks.

Sean is currently on a Fulbright Public Policy fellowship to Guatemala so be sure to add his blog to your reading list.

I'm always open to suggestions to feel free to post them in comments or send them privately to me.
